Overview
As water leaves an area, whether it be from a street, residential area or landscape, it has the potential to take pollutants with it. When this “run off” eventually makes its way to the ocean, it can have a huge impact on the water quality.

Labeling town and city storm drains is a great way to let citizens know that what they dump into their streets can lead directly to the waterways they recreate in. In 2000, Rhode Island Surfrider began a program to begin labeling storm drains throughout its coastal areas. Initially, storm drains around Newport, Rhode Island were labeled with donated tiles reading "Dump No Waste - Drains to Ocean." The project then spread to storm drains along Ocean Road in Narragansett, then to multiple other coastal towns in Narragansett Bay.

In all, hundreds of storm drains were labeled throughout Rhode Island’s coastal communities. Rhode Island Surfrider plans to continue this initiative in the future until all storm drains that lead to the ocean are properly labeled.
