Offshore Aquaculture Lecture (outreach) September 10, 2009, 6 p.m. Light supper, 7 p.m. Lecture
"Farming the Deep Blue: Opportunities for Increasing Sustainable Seafood
Production in New England"
Lecture describes aquaculture opportunities in uncharted waters
NARRAGANSETT-Rhode Island was once ranked 50th in the country in aquaculture production, but in recent years, aquaculture, particularly for shellfish in the salt ponds, has been growing steadily. Some state waters are even nearing their limits for aquaculture development.
"We have limited growth potential for the salt ponds in Rhode Island
because of so many other uses, but there is increasing interest in the
potential of offshore aquaculture," said David Beutel, aquaculture
coordinator for the R.I. Coastal Resources Management Council. In fact, one test project off Block Island in open ocean waters is trying to establish whether such operations can be viable for local aquaculturists.
According to Richard Langan, director of the Atlantic Marine Aquaculture
Center at the University of New Hampshire, near-shore aquaculture is
constrained by social, environmental, political, and other concerns, but
open-ocean aquaculture offers the potential to meet growing demand for
seafood and to be a sustainable alternative for fishing communities,
preserve working waterfronts, and generate substantial economic activity in coastal communities. Langan will discuss this, along with the potential for co-location of offshore energy and food production facilities, in his
lecture "Farming the Deep Blue: Opportunities for Increasing Sustainable Seafood Production in New England" at the URI Graduate School of
Oceanography Coastal Institute in Narragansett on September 10 at 7 p.m.
A light supper, including mussels donated by American Mussel Harvesters,
Inc., will be provided prior to the lecture on a first-come, first-served
basis.
Sponsored by the R.I. Ocean Special Area Management Plan and Rhode Island
Sea Grant. For more information, visit http://seagrant.gso.uri.edu. This
lecture is free, but seating is limited. To reserve your place, contact
Tracy Kennedy at (401) 874-6800.
